100 Organisations Received the Inaugural Privacy-Friendly Awards

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD), held the “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2021” (Awards) Presentation Ceremony (Ceremony) today (4 March) to recognise the efforts made by organisations in protecting personal data privacy. The Ceremony was officiated by Mr Erick TSANG Kwok-wai, IDSM, JP, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, as the Guest-of-Honour. The Ceremony was live-streamed online.

Among the 100 award-winning organisations, 69 were awarded the Gold Certificate and 31 were awarded the Silver Certificate. In his Opening Speech, Mr Tsang remarked, “I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to the award-winning public organisations and companies. Their work on the protection of personal data privacy has been highly commended by the Judging Panel. I would also like to thank the awardees for their tireless efforts and perseverance, which have built a good corporate culture of the protection of privacy in relation to personal data. The remarkable performance of the awardees has affirmed my belief that the protection of personal data privacy is an essential component of the continuous success of businesses in Hong Kong.”

The Judging Panel of the Awards has also identified five organisations with exemplary performance in different areas as outstanding Gold Certificate awardees. They are (in alphabetical order) Equal Opportunities Commission, The Hong Kong General Chamber of Small and Medium Business, Intellectual Property Department, Refinitiv Hong Kong Limited and Union Hospital. Representatives of the five organisations attended the Ceremony today and shared their experience and insights on the protection of personal data privacy with about 90 representatives of other award-winning organisations who attended the Ceremony online.

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (Privacy Commissioner), Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, extended her congratulations to the 100 awardees. The Privacy Commissioner said, “I hope that more and more organisations will join the event in the future. A bigger privacy-friendly community will help promote the culture of respecting and protecting personal data privacy.”

The PCPD organised the inaugural “Privacy-Friendly Awards” this year as a highlight to mark the 25th anniversary of the PCPD. The PCPD aims to promote the importance of the protection of personal data privacy through recognising the efforts made by organisations in protecting personal data privacy, and enabling public and private organisations as well as government departments to showcase their achievements in the protection of privacy.

PCPD Invites Participation in the Inaugural Privacy-Friendly Awards
to Showcase Achievements in Privacy Protection

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD), has been advocating that organisations should embrace the protection of personal data privacy as part of their organisation policy and culture in the light of public expectations on the protection of privacy relating to personal data. The PCPD is organising the inaugural “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2021” (Awards). It is open for application from today (5 October). The PCPD encourages government departments and organisations in both public and private sectors in Hong Kong to participate in the Awards and become a member of the privacy-friendly community in promoting the protection of personal data privacy.

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong, Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling said, “In an ever-changing business environment, protecting and respecting personal data privacy is of crucial importance. Through the Awards, the PCPD would like to recognise the efforts made by organisations in protecting personal data privacy, and enable enterprises, government departments as well as public and private organisations to showcase their achievements in protecting privacy.”

In addition to the Gold, Silver or Bronze “Privacy-Friendly” Certificate, the awardees will be presented with free annual membership of the PCPD Data Protection Officers’ Club and specified numbers of enrolment of Professional Workshops organised by the PCPD. Outstanding performers would also be invited to participate in publicity programmes to showcase their achievements in privacy protection.

Organisations can submit completed online application form and relevant supporting documents on or before 6 November 2020 via the following website (www.pcpd.org.hk/privacyfriendlyawards.html).

The list of awardees will be announced before the end of January 2021.
