PCPD Joins Hands with Members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities to Promote Privacy Awareness

(29 April 2016) The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“PCPD”) together with other 17 members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (“APPA”) will launch the “Privacy Awareness Week 2016” (“PAW 2016”) from 1 to 7 May.

The theme of PAW 2016 in Hong Kong is "Data Protection in Your Hands". The campaign is supported by 125 partner secondary schools and over 400 members of the Data Protection Officers' Club. Various promotion and public education activities will be organised during the week at schools and the community.

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Mr Stephen Kai-yi WONG said, “The increasing concerns about cyber security and data theft highlight the need for self-protection of personal data. This year’s theme is in line with the prevailing call for vigilance and staying smart.   Through participation in this annual international campaign, we hope that different sectors of the community can work together in promoting the culture of ‘Protect, Respect Personal Data’.

To echo this year's theme, the PCPD has specially designed four new posters with topics on children privacy, phone scam, privacy setting and sending emails. In the posters, lively comic characters are used to convey the messages that everybody can protect his own and respect others’ personal data by paying a little more attention to some of his usual daily activities.

In addition, the PCPD will stage a public education roadshow during the week with an exhibition vehicle shuttling 11 locations of different districts in Hong Kong. The PCPD will also organise an awareness talk in collaboration with a district elderly centre to share tips with the elderly on how to protect their personal data from phone scams and data protection in their daily life. In response to the recent conviction cases on direct marketing, the PCPD will arrange a sharing session to highlight the legal requirements of direct marketing with business enterprises and organisations.

On 7 May, the PCPD will host a grand finale for the PAW 2016 by holding the Award Presentation Ceremony of the School Partners Recognition Scheme 2016 cum Inter-school TV Advertisement Competition 2016. In particular, the School Partners Recognition Scheme offers gold, silver and bronze awards to commend and publicly recognise the achievements of secondary schools that demonstrate good practice in promoting personal data privacy protection on campuses.

PAW is an annual international event jointly held by the members of the APPA. It aims at raising public awareness of the importance of protecting personal data privacy through a week of public education activities. This year, PAW will also be joined by Australia, Canada, Colombia, Korea, Macao, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and the United States.
