(28 January 2015) The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Mr Allan Chiang is pleased to announce, following an open recruitment exercise, the appointment of Ms Fanny Wong as the Deputy Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data with effect from today.
Ms Wong is a barrister by profession. She joined the Royal Hong Kong Police (now called Hong Kong Police) as an Inspector in 1979 and later the Legal Department (now called Department of Justice) as a Crown Counsel in 1988. Ms Wong has worked in the Prosecutions, Civil, and Legal Policy Divisions of the Department of Justice and has prosecuted a wide range of commercial crimes and securities-related cases. She headed the Securities, Inland Revenue and Fraud Section, Magistrates' Court Advisory Section, and the Magistracy Appeals Section where she acted as an advocate in court and a supervisor of junior counsel and court prosecutors. Ms Wong has worked closely with the law enforcement agencies, statutory bodies and other government departments. She left the Department of Justice as a Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions.
"Ms Wong brings with her many years of experience in law enforcement, legal practice and public administration to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data ("PCPD"). With her proven leadership and management skills as well as extensive professional knowledge and experience, I am confident she will make significant contributions to leading the PCPD and meeting its challenges," said Mr Chiang.
The recruitment exercise was conducted by a selection board which comprised Mr Chiang, Professor John Bacon-Shone (Director, Social Science Research Centre, University of Hong Kong; member of the PCPD's Standing Committee on Technological Development) and Ms Shirley Ha (Director, Champion Technology Holdings Limited; member of the PCPD's Personal Data (Privacy) Advisory Committee).
