A total of 49 aspiring young filmmakers were awarded prizes and certificates in recognition of their outstanding creativity in the “Privacy Protection in Action: TV Advertisement Competition”. The one-of-a-kind event was jointly organized by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups with the aim of raising awareness of privacy among young people in Hong Kong.
“Privacy is a relatively new concept in our society. As the younger generation plays a vital role in shaping our society’s future, providing them with the education, support and means to push forward the message of privacy protection is of paramount importance, ” Mr. Raymond Tang, Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, said.
“Legislation can help ensure the protection of personal data privacy, but, more importantly, we must instill a culture in our society of respecting each other’s privacy rights.”
The competition received an enthusiastic response from over 140 young people in Hong Kong. The participants were required to produce a one-minute TV advertisement to raise the awareness of privacy protection among the younger generation. A series of seminars and workshops were conducted as part of the Competition on privacy protection and filmmaking techniques. The participants were encouraged to raise the awareness of privacy protection amongst their peer groups through the production of TV advertisements.
Winners were selected for the creativity, visual effect and originality of their entries as well as their ability to convey the message of privacy protection across to viewers. The distinguished panel of judges was comprised of Legislator the Hon. Audrey Eu, SC, JP, barrister Mr. Alan Leong, S.C, and Registrar of the Hong Kong Institute of Education, Dr. Cheung Wing-ming.
The Executive Director of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Dr. Rosanna Wong said, "I am very impressed by the outstanding efforts of the participants. The Competition not only allowed them to demonstrate their imagination through film making, but also allowed them to be creative on an important topic that affects us all. This combination of creativity and critical thinking is a highly commendable first step and I sincerely hope that they will keep up the good work."
The competition was open to all young people in Hong Kong between the ages of 12 to 34 under either the "Secondary School Category" or the "Open Category ".
In the "Secondary School Category ", the winner went to Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College. The Originality Award went to Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School and SKH Lui Ming Choi Secondary School. The Visual Effects Award went to St. Paul’s Co-educational College and Hong Kong Teachers’ Association Lee Heng Kwei Secondary School. The Cinematography Award went to Tak Nga Secondary School.
In the "Open Category ", the winner went to LI Wai-shing,TONG Yiu-hin,WONG Chau-ho and KWOK King-chi. The Originality Award went to NGO King-yan and SZE Chun-fan; as well as YIP Yuk-pui, TSE Pui-kong, CHOI Kwok-fai, FAN Kok-ting, Karan TANG Lai-hang and FUNG Kit-ying. The Visual Effects Award went to YING Sze-wah and HUNG Shiu-wo; as well as CHAN Tat-nang and SY Miu-kuen. The Cinematography Award went to LAU Chun-leung, TANG Kwong-fat, CHENG Ching-man, WONG Pak-nin and LO Kin-to.
The winning teams were announced at a prize presentation ceremony held today (28 June) at the Jockey Club Lecture Theatre, Sports House, 1 Stadium Path, Causeway Bay. The prizes were presented by guests of honour included Ms. Shelley Lee, JP, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Mr. Yang Ti-liang, GBM, JP, Former Chief Justice and Executive Councillor.
The winning TV advertisements will be available on the PCPD and u21 web site for the public viewing.
