Privacy Awareness Week 2018



Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is an annual promotion event we hold jointly with other members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) forum. This year, the event is celebrated in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore and United States.

The theme of PAW 2018 in Hong Kong is "Privacy: From Principles to Practice".  It is supported by about 400 members of the Data Protection Officers' Club (DPOC).


Privacy Awareness Week (PAW 2018) Highlights (7-13 May)

Activities held during PAW:
  1. Inauguration Ceremony of PAW 2018 cum Kick-off Ceremony of Privacy Campaign for SME and Forum on Cyber Security (8 May)

    The PAW 2018 Inauguration Ceremony, attended by an audience of over 200, was held on 8 May. It coincided with the Kick-off Ceremony of the Privacy Campaign for SME. The Non-official Member of the Executive Council and Member of the Legislative Council, the Honourable Jeffrey Kin-fung LAM, GBS JP was invited to be the officiating guest of the ceremonies.

    After the Kick-off Ceremony, the PCPD staged the Forum on Cyber Security. The panel featured Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, Mr Peter King-shun YAN, Detective Senior Inspector, Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force, Mr Dicky Tik-ki WONG, and Ms Nicola TANG, Senior Personal Data Officer of the PCPD. Facilitated by Honorary President of The Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, and Member of Standing Committee on Technological Developments of PCPD, Mr Francis FONG, the panel speakers shared their insights and experience concerning data protection in the context of cyber security.

  2. DPOC Welcome Session cum Lunch Talk on Privacy and Social Media Marketing (10 May)

    The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data welcomed DPOC members at the reception. During the Welcome Session, a talk on Privacy and Social Media Marketing was held. Mr Ralph Szeto, Chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Interactive Marketing and Mr Brad KWOK, Senior Personal Data Officer of the PCPD shared with members on privacy and social media marketing.

  3. Educational Talks to Senior Citizens (7 - 11 May)

    To help senior citizens recognise potential data privacy risks and prevent them from being victimised by crime and financial exploitation, five talks were held in collaboration with NGOs to share tips on personal data protection in daily life.

  4. School talks for Partnering Schools of Student Ambassador for Privacy Protection Programme (7 & 10 May)

    The 2018 Student Ambassador for Privacy Protection Programme consisted of a Partnering School Recognition Prgramme and a mobile app design competition. Schools were invited to join as school partners to organise on-campus promotions in relation to the protection of personal data. To help secondary school students to acquire basic knowledge of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and to learn how to protect their online privacy, school talks were organised with the support of the partnering schools.

Publicity Initiatives launched during PAW 2018:
  1. This year, the PCPD is very honoured to have invited the renowned veteran of the media industry, Ms Candy Shuk-mui CHEA, to serve as the Privacy Special Ambassador. Her widely accepted positive image can definitely help disseminate messages on personal data privacy protection.
     
  2. Broadcast of TV advertisement at elevator TV monitors at commercial and residential buildings (4 – 13 May)

    A TV advertisement on online privacy protection was broadcast at elevator TV monitors at 600 commercial buildings and 275 residential buildings.

  3. Radio mini drama series “Get to know more about personal data protection”《中小企保障個人資料你要知》(7 – 11 May)

    The radio mini drama series was broadcast on Commercial Radio 811 and 903 (broadcasting 6 times daily). The drama comprises five 90-seconds episodes which aims at raising the awareness of the importance of protecting customers’ personal data privacy among SME.
     
  4. Interview with Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data on Commercial Radio 881 current affairs programme 《人民大道中》(8 May)

    A media interview with Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data was broadcast on Commercial Radio 881 current affairs programme 《人民大道中》(in Cantonese) to promote the Privacy Campaign for SME.
     
  5. Placement of advertisements at MTR train doors’ windows (10 – 23 May)

    Advertisements were placed at MTR train doors’ windows of Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line and Kwun Tong to promote protection of personal data privacy.

  6. Interview with Assistant Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Complaints, Communications & Education) at an elderly programme《快樂長門人》(12 May)

    An interview with Assistant Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Complaints, Communications & Education) was broadcast at an elderly programme《快樂長門人》(in Cantonese) on TVB Jade to convey the privacy protection tips among the elderly.
     
  7. Broadcast of a series of radio segment titled 《私隱補習社》(14 – 16 May)

    A series of segment titled 《私隱補習社》(in Cantonese) was broadcast on Commercial Radio 903 to raise the awareness of privacy protection among the general public.
     
  8. Broadcast of TV advertisement at community centres/ halls under Home Affairs Department (Starting from 8 May)

    A TV advertisement on online privacy protection has been broadcast at more than 30 community centres/ halls under Home Affairs Department from 8 May for a year.
     
  9. New posters for promoting personal data protection

    A series of new posters were produced for promoting personal data protection for distributing to all local secondary schools and DPOC members.
