Raising Awareness of Privacy Protection of the Property Management Industry
for a Better Living
Property management involves a vast amount of occupants’ and employees’ personal data. To raise the awareness of protecting personal data privacy among the residents and property management practitioners, the office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD) has joined hands with the Property Management Services Authority (PMSA) to organise a series of privacy protection activities for property management bodies, including property management companies, owners’ corporations, owners’ committees, etc.
In concluding the campaign, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong, Mr Stephen Kai-yi WONG said, “The property management industry is closely intertwined with our daily lives. Property management companies can highlight their quality service and enhance their competitive edge by practising proper handling of personal data to gain their clients’ trust and confidence, bringing about a win-win outcome.”
In this six-month campaign, various activities were organised to enhance property management practitioners’ all-round knowledge of personal data protection. The activities included:

A four-episode radio drama series entitled “Privacy Clubhouse”, set against the background of a property management company and an owners’ corporation;

Professional workshops on data protection in property management practices;

Talks on requirements under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance to property management companies, attracting over 200 practitioners; and
-
On its Facebook page “Privacy in Sunlight”, the PCPD reminded property management practitioners and members of the public to protect personal data in commonly encountered scenarios.
The finale of the campaign was a slogan competition to encourage property management practitioners to showcase their creativity by composing slogans about protecting their clients’ personal data.
The Champion goes to Henderson Land Group – Well Born Real Estate Management Limited (Quality Management Team). The award-winning entry is “
住戶資料加把鎖,優質管理做得妥”. The First runner-up goes to Nan Fung Property Management – Wonder Building. Its slogan is “
保障私隱我做到,住戶安心無煩惱”.
The full level of assistance from the co-organiser, PMSA, and the supporting organisation, the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies, contributed to the success of the campaign. Their efforts in professional development in the property management industry have greatly facilitated the PCPD’s promotion and organisation of this privacy campaign for the industry.
