[Image of Promoting Awareness] Promotional Activities The primary objective of the PCPD's Corporate Communications Division ("the CCD") is to raise awareness of and promote compliance with the Ordinance within the community. After eight years of educational programmes and promotional campaigns, privacy is no longer an abstruse concept in Hong Kong. More significantly, personal data privacy has come to represent a set of fundamental rights that offer something of value to the individual and society more generally. In the past, communications goals have been largely dictated by the need to educate the public about their privacy rights and to encourage data users to respect personal data by complying with the provisions of the Ordinance. More recently communications programmes have shifted emphasis from satisfying a generic need towards fulfilling the more precise needs of a defined audience e.g. the younger generation. This has meant that education and publicity programmes have focused upon contents that are meaningful to children, teenagers and young adults. The CCD has deliberately sought to educate and inform youngsters in the belief that it is important to influence their thinking and attitudes towards privacy during their formative years. In line with this belief more recent communication campaigns have sought to derive greater impact from each dollar spent on this target audience. They also seek to heighten awareness and cultivate a better understanding of personal data privacy among younger members of society. With these objectives in mind, the following promotional activities were undertaken in the reporting year. Photo Competition ~ "To Build a Harmonious Society" [Image of A workshop was held in Macau to brief entrants about consumer rights, personal data privacy and photo-taking techniques.] [Image of image] A workshop was held in Macau to brief entrants about consumer rights, personal data privacy and photo-taking techniques.   [Image of The PCPD held 2 workshops in Hong Kong on personal data privacy and photo-taking techniques, which were well attended by over 200 members of the public.] The PCPD held 2 workshops in Hong Kong on personal data privacy and photo-taking techniques, which were well attended by over 200 members of the public.   [Image of image] This photo competition was a cultural exchange project co-organized by the PCPD and Macau Consumer Council. Launched in March 2005 the competition encouraged young people to give serious thought to the importance of respecting privacy in the process of building a harmonious society. The competition was divided between two classes of entrants: secondary school students and an open category. Two educational workshops were staged in Hong Kong to launch the competition which has produced some high quality entries. The deadline for submissions was 30th April 2005 and it is anticipated that the entries will be judged in May 2005 by a panel of photography experts. Poster Design Competition ~"Respect Others and Protect Privacy" This competition, launched in February 2005, required entrants to use graphic design as a medium for stimulating people's interest in privacy protection. The competition also targeted two classes of entrants: students and an open category. Once the results of this competition are declared it is the PCPD's intention to adopt the winning graphics in official promotional materials. In total 173 entries were submitted to the PCPD by the deadline - 31st March 2005. The winners of the competition will be announced in May 2005 .   [Image of image] [Image of image] Snapshots of the "Telling you my Secret" privacy entertainment show. A Privacy Entertainment Show for Primary School Pupils ~ "Telling you my Secret" The show -"Telling you my Secret"- was first staged in 2004 in 30 primary schools in Hong Kong where it was enthusiastically received by in excess of 10,000 pupils. The theme of the show was to educate children about the importance of respecting each other's privacy. As privacy is a challenging concept for children to understand the show was presented in an entertaining way. The renowned children's programme presenter, Mr. Harry Wong hosted the event which made use of music, magic, puppet shows, drama and role play as means of appealing to children. The initial shows were such a success that the PCPD decided to stage them for a second time to new audiences of children. In December 2004, the show reopened at the Olympian City. By March 2005 it had been staged at an additional 20 primary schools where the performances were attended by 8,000 children. [Image of image] To accompant the show, educational booklet and souvenirs wre given to all participating students [Image of image] [Image of image]   Privacy Protection Drama Show This hilarious privacy-themed drama was first staged in 2003. Because of its popularity with audiences, the show was restaged at Sha Tin Town Hall on 8th June 2004. The comic treatment of everyday privacy-related problems, and possible solutions to them, were performed by actors drawn from the Artiste Training Alumni Association. The performance was enjoyed by an audience of over 1000 people.
