Date:19 March 2010
Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data's Annual Report won international awards for three consecutive years

1. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“PCPD”)’s 2008-09 Annual Report has won the Silver Prize of the 23rd International Mercury Awards under the category of Government Organizations and Offices – Overall Presentation.

2.  The aim of the Mercury Awards is to honor annual reports which are creative, effective and fruitful in communications.  All the finalists were selected by a professional judging panel and were highly praised by the public relations industry.

3.  The theme of this Annual Report is “The Art of Promoting Privacy Rights” highlighting the statutory role of the Privacy Commissioner to promote awareness of personal data privacy.

4.  PCPD’s Annual Report has won three straight international awards.  With outstanding achievement in design communications, the 2006-07 and 2007-08 Annual Reports won the Bronze Prizes of the International Astrid Awards for two consecutive years.

5.  The PCPD is an independent statutory organization.  Though it is not a government department, it believes that it needs to report its work to the public.  Therefore, the PCPD endeavors to publish a clear and easy-to-read annual report with different design concepts to report to the public its financial statement, important complaint cases, legal views and promotional activities.

6.  At present, the Privacy Commissioner and his colleagues are preparing for the 2009-10 Annual Report.  It is believed that the Report can be completed and published before the next Privacy Commissioner assumes office.

7.    Mr. Roderick Woo said, “PCPD’s Annual Report is one of our major communication channels with the public.  My colleagues and I are much inspired by the fact that under the low production cost, our Annual Reports won three straight awards, which imply international recognition.”
