Seminar on Protection of Online Personal Data

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“PCPD”) today (27 August) held a seminar, titled “Protection of Online Personal Data”, aiming at raising the awareness of protection of online personal data of data users.

The seminar was hosted by the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Mr. Roderick B Woo.  Mr. Woo said, “Leakage of personal data on the Internet has occurred recently.  While enjoying the convenience brought by technology, we have to strengthen the measures on IT security.  In Day 2 of the Privacy Awareness Week 2007, the PCPD holds this seminar to introduce the good security practices of handling online personal data to the members of the Data Protection Officers’ Club (“DPOC”).”

Two distinguished guests, Mr. Sean Lin, SIP of Hong Kong Police Force and Ir. Dr. K.P. Chow, Centre Associate Director of Centre for Information Security and Cryptography, the University of Hong Kong, were invited to offer practical tips on the handling of personal data via electronic means.

About 140 members of DPOC from the government departments, telecommunications, banking and finance, insurance and property management sectors attended the seminar.

The Data Protection Officers’ Club was established in 2000 by the PCPD to provide a platform for two-way communications between the PCPD and professionals tasked with the responsibility of implementing and coordinating measures to protect personal data privacy.  By participating in the seminars, forums and workshops regularly organized by DPOC, members can update themselves with the latest development in privacy issues, and exchange views and share experiences with data protection officers across a broad range of organizations.
