Reaching Out to the Community – Privacy Commissioner Interviewed by Media to Explain Eight Data Security Incidents

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Privacy Commissioner), Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, was interviewed by RTHK News’ “Hong Kong Today”, RTHK Radio 1’s “HK2000” and Now News’ “News Magazine” on 7 and 8 July. She elaborated on eight incidents relating to the improper disclosure and security of personal data handled by her Office earlier.

During the interview, the Privacy Commissioner emphasised that the eight incidents were isolated cases primarily caused by staff negligence or the lack of awareness to protect privacy. While organisations in Hong Kong have shown improved awareness regarding privacy protection over the past few years, she highlighted the need for ongoing monitoring and assessment to ensure that employees would properly follow organisations’ procedures and policies. She recommended that organisations should enhance employees’ awareness and capabilities in privacy protection through training, formulate clear and easy-to-understand work guidelines, and develop a comprehensive data breach response plan, etc.

In addition, the Assistant Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Complaints and Criminal Investigation), Ms Rebecca HO Kan-yeuk, was interviewed by RTHK Radio 3’s “Hong Kong Today” and RTHK Radio 3’s “Backchat” on 7 and 8 July on the details of the eight data security incidents.
