2"Information Security Enhancement Campaign"

In 2006, the PCPD handled a record high number of cases involving online data leakage. Organizations of both private and public sectors were found leaking personal data of individuals on the internet by mistake. The spate of online data leakage incidents had aroused widespread media coverage as well as public concern about online data privacy.

In an effort to prevent recurrence of such incidents, the PCPD launched a campaign titled "Information Security Enhancement Campaign" together with three prominent IT professional bodies, namely Information Systems Audit and Control Association (Hong Kong Chapter), Internet Professional Association and Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, aimed at raising privacy awareness among IT professionals.

As part of the Campaign, an information booklet, titled Recommended Procedures for IT Practitioners on Personal Data Handling, was published in October 2006. The booklet outlined the proper procedures to be followed in circumstances where IT contractor or sub-contractor are appointed to access or process personal data in compliance with the Ordinance.

Furthermore, the PCPD held a large-scale public seminar on "Protecting Personal Data in the Electronic Media" in March 2007. IT security experts and representatives from major IT professional bodies were invited to share best personal data privacy practices and experiences in everyday work with a large audience of over 340 people from government departments, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, educational institutions and others.
