A Sample Survey of Web Sites in Hong Kong
on Practices in Relation to the
Collection of Personal Data on the Internet
(Conducted in July to October 1998)

Survey Findings

The survey was conducted on 531 Hong Kong web sites from July to October 1998. The web sites were selected from the World Wide Web database contained in The Chinese University of Hong Kong homepage and the Hong Kong SAR Government homepage as well as from references drawn from a number of Internet guides published in Hong Kong. As the total number of web sites hosted by organisations in Hong Kong is estimated to be over 5,000, the survey covers approximately one-tenth of web sites in Hong Kong.

As can be seen from the chart following, the web sites visited cover a very wide spectrum of both public and private sector activities. ular, the PCPD had added a new section to its web site, giving practical guidance on this.
