Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs and Privacy Commissioner Attend Meeting of the Legislative Council
The Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs (SCMA), Mr Erick TSANG Kwok-wai, GBS, IDSM, JP, attended a meeting of the Legislative Council (LegCo) on 2 and 3 July for the debate on the motion on “Developing a personal data protection regime framework to address the challenges in the age of artificial intelligence” and delivered speeches. The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Privacy Commissioner), Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, also attended the meeting to listen to the valuable views and recommendations of Members.
In his speech, the SCMA said, “The Government and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data welcome the valuable views and recommendations raised by the Honourable Members in the debate. We will adopt a pragmatic and proactive approach in studying and considering the views and recommendations of Members and shall continue to pay heed to the personal data privacy risks posed to Hong Kong by the development of artificial intelligence (AI). At the same time, we will make reference to the experiences of the Country and other regions in protecting personal data privacy and take into account the actual circumstances of Hong Kong in reviewing the current personal data protection regime in a timely manner to adequately safeguard personal data privacy amid the rapid and healthy development of AI.”
The motion moved by Hon Doreen KONG Yuk-foon, as amended by Hon Duncan CHIU, Hon LAM San-keung and Ir Hon LEE Chun-keung, was passed by the LegCo.
