Privacy Campaign for Telecommunications
1. The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Mr. Allan Chiang and the Chairman of Communications Association of Hong Kong, Dr. Hubert Chan today (20 September) officiated at the opening ceremony of the Privacy Campaign for Telecommunications.
2. The Campaign, “Protecting Personal Data: I Can Do It!”, is jointly organized by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“PCPD”) and the Communications Association of Hong Kong, with the aim of raising telecommunications practitioners’ awareness of protecting personal data in their daily work. The Campaign will run until February 2012.
3. In the opening ceremony, the Privacy Commissioner Mr. Allan Chiang said, “To be successful, businesses should take the ‘customer-centric and proactive’ approach. In today’s highly competitive telecommunications market, mere provision of quality service and competitive price is not enough. To achieve enduring and higher level of success, organizations have to compete in new areas like corporate social responsibility and protection of human rights, including personal data protection. In this regards, respect for personal privacy is a key success factor.”
4. “This is the fifth industry-specific privacy campaign organized by the PCPD. I am glad that we could work with the Communications Association of Hong Kong to create a culture of respecting privacy and protecting personal data in the telecommunications industry. As telecommunications practitioners often collect and use large quantity of customers’ personal data, the Campaign can help them better understand the requirements under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (“the Ordinance”) so that they can handle customers’ data properly.”
5. Meanwhile, the Chairman of Communications Association of Hong Kong, Dr. Hubert Chan remarked that members of the Association would try their best to enhance their alertness in handling personal data in order to achieve a win-win situation for the industry and the public.
6. During the Campaign, the PCPD will organize seminars for individual telecommunications companies to explain to the practitioners the requirements under the Ordinance, analyze related cases for them and answer questions about data protection so as to assist them in compliance with the Ordinance in their work.
7. Moreover, to encourage more participation in the Campaign, a speech contest will be held. Telecommunication practitioners can take this opportunity to express their views on personal data privacy protection and share their experiences.
