Mr. Allan Chiang took office as Privacy Commissioner

Mr. Allan Chiang Yam-wang took office today as the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data for a term of five years from 4 August 2010.

“I am very honoured to be tasked with protecting personal data privacy in Hong Kong.  I feel a profound sense of responsibility and look forward to working with my staff and all stakeholders in the community to chart an exciting new path of advocating personal data privacy in Hong Kong.” Mr. Chiang said.

“I consider that this is a very opportune time for me to assume the role of Privacy Commissioner.  The issues of privacy and the protection of personal data have been rapidly evolving in this information age.  The recent investigation against the Octopus group of companies in relation to the management of their customers’ personal data have brought public awareness of their personal data privacy rights to an unprecedentedly high level.  As the Privacy Commissioner, I pledge that I will secure the protection of personal data privacy through (i) promoting the awareness and understanding of privacy rights among data users, as well as (ii) taking regulatory action to uphold this basic human right.”

Prior to joining the PCPD, Mr. Chiang was the Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Design Centre from 2007 to 2009. Before that, he served in the Government for 33 years and was the Postmaster General from 2003 to 2006.
