Privacy Commissioner
published new revised edition of a book to provide in-depth
interpretation
1. A revised edition of the publication titled “Data
Protection Principles in the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance – from
the Privacy Commissioner’s perspective” (“the Book”) was released today
by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“the
PCPD”).
2. “The first edition of the Book appeared in
2006. The last few years have witnessed some remarkable
technological developments which seriously impact on the individuals’
rights to privacy in relation to their personal data. I have
therefore decided that it is timely to update the book.” said the
Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“the Commissioner”) Mr.
Roderick Woo.
3. As the only reference book of its kind giving the
readers and data protection officers an insight into the actual
application of the data protection principles which form the
cornerstone of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (“the Ordinance”),
the Book explains how the major provisions of the Ordinance are applied
in a systematic and in-depth manner. Topics are selected
primarily on the basis of their practical importance to data users in
handling personal data and to data subjects in understanding their
rights. Where appropriate, references were made to the relevant
case laws, Administrative Appeals Board’s decisions and views taken by
the Commissioner in the handling of complaints and enquiry cases in
discharge of his regulatory functions.
4. The Book is available both in book and electronic
forms. The hard copy of the Book can be purchased at the price of
HK$200. To place an order, please contact the PCPD.
5. The Book can also be freely accessible on the
PCPD’s website at
