The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and Octopus Card System 

1.    The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data ("the Commissioner"), Mr. Roderick B. Woo met with Ms. Prudence Chan, the Chief Executive Officer of Octopus Holdings Limited (“Octopus”) this afternoon in his office.

2.    The meeting was initiated by the Commissioner who wants to understand all the relevant issues concerning the Octopus card system which may impact on personal data privacy of individuals in Hong Kong.

3.    The Commissioner found the meeting informative and productive.  Ms. Chan expressed willingness to cooperate with the Commissioner in addressing the various concerns the public may have concerning their personal data privacy in relation to the Octopus card system.

4.    The Commissioner needs to review the information given to him at the meeting before deciding on what follow-up action to take.  The Commissioner is pleased that Octopus shows that it will continue to cooperate with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in this matter and will consider some of the initial suggestions made by the Commissioner at today’s meeting.
