Privacy Commissioner responds to an opinion survey report on Octopus cards and privacy issues

1.    In response to the results of an opinion poll regarding privacy concerns of Octopus card conducted by the New Forum, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“the Commissioner”) Mr. Roderick B. Woo made the following response.

2.    The Commissioner announced at a press gathering last month that he would carry out investigations and inspections against several organizations, including the Octopus Cards Limited (“OCL”), to ensure that their handling of personal data comply with the provisions of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.

3.    Mr. Woo said, “I have read the New Forum’s opinion poll and comprehend the concern and worry of the pubic on the handling of personal data by the OCL.  We are dealing with the matter in a serious manner and will make known of the results as soon as they are completed.”
