Response to Media Enquiries

Date: 21 November 2009
Response to Media Enquiries

1.    In response to media enquiries concerning some reports today (21 Nov) that an Audit Report about to be published shows that the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“the PCPD”) had used public money improperly, the PCPD wishes to make the following statement.

2.    The allegation that the current Privacy Commissioner Mr. Roderick Woo used public fund to host a farewell dinner for the former Privacy Commissioner Mr. Raymond Tang is simply untrue.  The facts remain that Mr. Tang stayed as the Privacy Commissioner until 11 January 2005 and the dinner took place within his tenure on 7 January 2005.  Mr. Roderick Woo did not assume and take control of the office of PCPD until six months later, i.e. on 1 August 2005.  Mr. Woo had no knowledge of the dinner at the time and was not invited to it.

3.    The Government’s requirement on confidentiality applies in the present situation.  The PCPD is not allowed to respond to the contents of the Audit Report or any report about the same at this stage.  The PCPD will at the earliest possible opportunity meet the media and answer all enquiries from the public.
